Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Health care is a fundamental need, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as “Obamacare,” was specifically designed to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health insurance. Whether you’re navigating life’s changes—like a job transition, marriage, or a move—or just simply looking for the best health care options, the ACA provides a reliable pathway to secure coverage.

What Makes ACA Health Insurance Essential?

1. Affordability and Accessibility: The ACA offers federally regulated and subsidized health plans, making it possible for millions of Americans to afford health care. During the Open Enrollment period, or after experiencing a qualifying life event, you can access a range of health plans tailored to your needs.

2. Tailored Health Coverage: Finding the right health care plan can be complex, with varying deductibles, co-pays, premiums, and provider networks to consider. The ACA simplifies this process by offering a marketplace where you can compare multiple options based on your household size, income, and zip code. This ensures that you choose a plan that fits your budget and health needs.

3. Guided Support: Choosing health insurance doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Our expert guidance helps you navigate the options from numerous health insurance carriers and brokers, ensuring you find the best plan for your unique situation. By entering your zip code and some basic details, we’ll match you with suitable ACA health plans, providing you with the best options to protect your health.

Federally Facilitated Marketplace

The Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM), operated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in accordance with federal standards, is an online marketplace where individuals are able to purchase health insurance. Insurance premiums are on a sliding scale based on income.

The Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM), operated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in accordance with federal standards, is an online marketplace where individuals are able to purchase health insurance. Using the FFM, low and moderate-income people are able to obtain payment assistance to help them buy health insurance:

  • Some people may also be eligible for other health insurance subsidies, such as cost-sharing reductions (CSR) and premium tax credits. Substantial subsidies are available through the FFM for those at 100% - 400% of the FPL. Insurance premiums are on a sliding scale based on income.

  • Unless the employer coverage is unaffordable or insufficient, people with access to employer coverage cannot receive a subsidy through the FFM.

  • People can also use the FFM to apply for Medicaid.

Open enrollment for health plans begins November 1 in Indiana, and will end January 15. Coverage will take effect January 1, as long as you enroll by December 15. If you apply between December 16 and January 15, your new plan will take effect February 1.

The open enrollment period this fall gives you a chance to take advantage of the larger and more widely available premium subsidies created by the American Rescue Plan. If you have questions about open enrollment, you can read more in our comprehensive guide to open enrollment.

You may still be able to enroll in coverage for this year, if you experience a qualifying life event or if you’ve received unemployment compensation at any point in the last year.

You can quickly compare health plan options and apply during Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period. Find plans that fit your needs and budget. Explore On and Off Exchange plans, which do not provide Advanced Premium Tax Credits.
